Tori Spelling is breaking down her short-lived romance with The House of Yes costar Freddie Prinze Jr.
“It was supposed to be this very innocent relationship on camera, and it kind of was off camera and he and I actually developed a thing for each other,” Spelling, 52, said on the Wednesday, March 5, episode of iHeartRadio’s “misSPELLING” podcast. “We went on one date, and to this day — I mean, it wasn’t meant to be. My friends ruined it.”
Spelling recalled living in an apartment with her “best friend,” but “had all [of her] friends over” who were home from college and smoking weed.
“I was like, ‘You guys, I have a date. Take this serious[ly]. He’s gonna smell this, he’s gonna think it’s me. It’s not me.’ And they were just like, ‘We’ll be good, we’ll be good.’ And I was like, ‘Well, it’s too late now, you’re all stoned and you’re sitting on my couch and he’s gonna walk through.’ ‘Cause I lived in a building where the elevator came up. So he came up to pick me up to go to a movie at Universal City.”
She continued, “Anyway, he came up, and my friends were so weird, and they were so embarrassing, and I just remember one of my friends was like, ‘Freddie, is that Frederick?’ And I was just like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ He goes, ‘Do I call you Fred?’ I was like, ‘What is happening?’”
Spelling noted that Prinze Jr., 49, was “very shy” but the pair went on their date despite the interaction with her friends.
“He was like, ‘OK are you ready?’ And we went. So we did make out during lunch in our trailer, during filming — like multiple times, just kissing … he was very pure and like anyway, took me on a date and we saw a movie,” Spelling recalled, noting that she and Prinze Jr. watched Cable Guy.
At the time, Spelling recalled Prinze Jr. being “very into” comics while she was interested in DIY activities and decoupaging — and after they kissed, she even gifted him a wooden box that looked like a treasure chest with comic books mod podged on top.
“So that was it, but we stayed friends-ish,” Spelling said. “I still remember Freddie coming to set 90210 and I didn’t know and it was after and I was like, ‘Oh, hi hi,’ and he’s like ‘Oh hi.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, [the makeup artist] knew I was coming. I have an audition for this movie.’”
Spelling recalled that Prinze Jr. was there to audition for I Know What You Did Last Summer, where he was ultimately cast as Ray. He met now-wife Sarah Michelle Gellar on set, with the couple exchanging vows in 2002. They welcomed daughter Charlotte and son Rocky in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
While Spelling did not find The One in Prinze Jr., she tied the knot with Dean McDermott in 2006. The pair went on to welcome son Liam, daughter Stella, daughter Hattie, son Finn and son Beau, in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2017, respectively. (McDermott is also dad to son Jack from his previous marriage to Mary Jo Eustace.) Spelling and McDermott divorced in 2024, which was settled the next year.
