Sam Asghari has broken his silence on ex-wife Britney Spears’ recent DUI arrest— kind of.
Asghari spoke to NewsNation on Thursday, March 5, discussing the ongoing military conflict between the United States and Iran. However, a question about Spears was slipped into the mix. Asghari attempted to dodge the inquiry, deciding to keep the conversation on current affairs. Asghari noted that he “cannot skip the past” and celebrates his past experiences.
“I think everybody makes mistakes and everybody deserves privacy,” he said. “If we learn from history, we have to understand the press could hurt somebody recovering from a situation like this.”
Us Weekly confirmed that Spears, 44, was arrested for driving under the influence on Wednesday, March 4, in Ventura County, California. She was booked the following morning and released shortly after. Spears is scheduled for court on May 4, per online records.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” Spears’ rep told Us following her arrest. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue, needed plan to set her up for success for well-being.”
The pop star’s rep added that her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, “are going to be spending time with her” in the coming days. (Spears shares her two children with ex-husband Kevin Federline.)
“Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue, needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the statement concluded.
Spears and Asghari were together for six years before they tied the knot in June 2022. The pair initially met on the music video for Spears’ song “Slumber Party.” Asghari was by Spears’ side during a portion of her 13-year conservatorship, which was ultimately terminated in 2021.
Ashgari and Spears separated in July 2023 after one year of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in May 2024.
One year after her divorce, Spears opened up about how she saw her marriage to Asghari as a “fake distraction.”
“We’re just people so fragile and human. The hardest years of my life were my two sons gone for those 3 years,” Spears wrote via Instagram in August 2025, referring to her previous falling out with her sons who did not attend her and Ashari’s wedding. “I was cut off from calling or texting and I remember in shock my secret to survival was denial and a lot of tears.”
The singer continued, “It’s weird. Me and Sam were married but it almost felt like a fake distraction to help me deal with it.”
Asghari reacted to Spears’ post, sharing that his marriage to the singer was “very real” to him.
“Our marriage was very real to me. It may have been short, but we were together for seven years,” he said in an August 2025 statement to People. “I was in love with her, will always have love for her, and wish her the best always.”
Since their split, Asghari has frequently wished his ex-wife well.
“I just hope the happiest for her,” Asghari exclusively told Us in October 2025. “And, like I said before that, I celebrate the past, and it’s a big part of me, so I think everything should go well for her.”
