A woman from Texas has been indicted for capital murder in the death of her 3-year-old son.
A Collin County grand jury returned an indictment against Chelsea Rene Berg charging her with one count of capital murder of a person under 10 and one count of injury to a child, according to ABC 7. She will stand trial a later date.
Berg’s son, Dawson Zamora, was unresponsive on October 14, 2025, when her boyfriend, Christopher Thomas Alexander, brought him to Medical City McKinney for treatment.
Police said that the young boy had “obvious signs of trauma.” He was put on life support, though taken off it on December 7, 2025.
The McKinney Police Department confirmed that Berg, 30, was arrested on December 8, 2025, according to CBS News. Meanwhile, Alexander, 30, was also charged with capital murder in connection to the boy’s death.
Berg and Alexander were first arrested in October 2025 and they were charged with injury to a child, which is a first degree felony. Additionally, Alexander was charged with tampering with evidence.
Berg was released from jail on bond, though was arrested for a second time in December 2025. As for Alexander, he has remained in police custody at the Collin County Jail since his first arrest.
The couple was first arrested after police reported to the hospital in October 2025 and learned of Dawson’s condition. At the time, medical staff said the child had serious injuries and was unresponsive upon his arrival.
Alexander told medical staff that he found the boy after hearing a thud from another room of his home, according to an arrest affidavit viewed by the outlet.
Medical staff quickly learned that the boy had severe brain trauma, bleeding in the brain and bruising all over his body, as well as wounds on his chest, stomach and rear.
While speaking to police, medical staff said that the boy’s injuries did not line up with Alexander’s explanation of his injuries.
Berg initially told police she left her son with Alexander on October 14, 2025, while she was at work. She claimed that he called her after her lunch break to tell her she was going to the hospital, per the affidavit.
Authorities showed Berg pictures of her son, though she insisted that he didn’t have those injuries when she left her home that morning.
Police later obtained warrants for Berg and Alexander’s phones, and they found text messages one month before Dawson’s hospitalization in which they discussed his bruises and injuries.
While Berg has been formally indicted, Alexander had his first court appearance regarding the charges on February 6. It is not currently clear if he has entered a plea and a lawyer has not been publicly listed for him.
Dawson’s father, Dahrian Zamroa, confirmed his son’s death in a social media post at the time of his passing.
“His gift to me was his final breath and we are now forever interlocked with my birth and his death. He held on to spend one last birthday with me and refused to go until then,” Dahrian wrote via Facebook at the time, per CBS News.
