Former Marine and DIA officer Robert McCall (Washington) lives a quiet life working for a big box department store in Boston, but the sleepless nights he experiences lead him to meeting teenager Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) while frequenting an all-night diner. When he realizes that she’s a sex worker for Russian mobsters, he can’t turn a blind eye after she gets violently brutalized by them and ends up in the ICU. Armed with a deadly set of skills, McCall returns from his self-imposed retirement to enact vigilante justice on the men who hurt Teri.
In the role of McCall, Washington cuts a formidable figure, and he nails the blend of gravitas, intensity and charisma necessary to make the role work. The Equalizer is an entertaining and gritty thriller that benefits immensely from Antoine Fuqua‘s stylish direction and the chemistry between Moretz and Washington. ‘Speed’ (1994) — HuluAfter LAPD officers Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) and Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels) prevent a bomb attack, the perpetrator, retired bomb squad member Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper), fakes his own death and returns with a vengeance. He orchestrates a wicked plot: a bomb planted on an active city bus that will activate once the speed reaches 50 miles per hour, and detonate if it goes below 50. So long as Jack delivers to him a $3.7 million, Payne will deactivate the bomb. With the help of bus rider Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock), Jack and Harry try to keep the hostages safe while figuring out how Payne is able to stay one step ahead of them.
With a ridiculous, high-concept plot, riveting execution and Reeves cementing his leading man mettle, Speed endures as a classic ’90s action thriller. This film is pure popcorn entertainment at its finest — the pacing and energy are exhilarating and the filmmaking is efficient, so if you’re looking for a fun time at the movies, you’re sure to get it. It also helps that the villain is played to maniacal perfection by Hopper, who portrays Pane with delirious menace. Speed is, ultimately, a timeless Hollywood classic.
While Philadelphia sound technician Jack Terry (John Travolta) records sound effects at a local park, he ends up witnessing a car swerve off the road and plunge into a creek. The driver is killed, but Jack rescues a young woman named Sally Bedina (Nancy Allen). After accompanying her to the hospital, Jack learns that Sally was riding in the car as an escort for presidential hopeful Governor George McRyan, and Jack realizes he heard a gunshot followed by a tire blowout on the audio he inadvertently recorded of the accident. Suspecting the accidental car crash was actually a carefully planned assassination, Jack investigates and uncovers a conspiracy that could kill him.
Taking key inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock, Italian giallo and the 1966 Italian film Blowup by Michelangelo Antonioni, Blow Out is its own highly stylish and paranoid thriller masterpiece, showcasing a fantastic early role for Travolta. Brian De Palma‘s signature trademarks of suspense, sleaze and audacious filmmaking techniques are on full display in a movie that draws on post-Watergate political corruption.
