Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has accomplished plenty in his racing career though there is still one title eluding him — “dad.”
“There will be a time and a place for it, and I can’t wait for that part,” Hamilton told The Times of London in a September 2024 profile. “Right now, I have some work to do.”
Hamilton is the first and only Black F1 driver after joining the league when he was 22. After racing on Mercedes’ team for 12 years and winning over 100 titles, he jumped ship to Ferrari in 2024.
“I have had an amazing 11 years with this team and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together. Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old,” Hamilton said in the statement. “It’s a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. But the time is right for me to take this step and I’m excited to be taking on a new challenge.”

October 2023Lewis Hamilton long placed his dreams of fatherhood on the back burner in order to excel in his sport.
“I don’t have time for that. I’m enjoying being an uncle,” Hamilton told Germany’s Blick when asked about whether it’s time to start thinking about a family planning timeline. “I haven’t decided on that big step yet. I still have goals with the race car — and everything else has to take a back seat. I want to do my job 100 percent.”
He concluded, “Of course, you have to find the necessary balance with your private life and make compromises. But fortunately, that day hasn’t come yet.”
September 2024While speaking with The Times of London in September 2024, Lewis Hamilton said that he hopes to have kids “one day.”
“I wouldn’t be able to do what I do to the level that I do it today with that,” he told the newspaper. “One of my best friends has just had a kid and I’m seeing how manic it is — and my nieces and nephew are a handful.”
According to Hamilton, he is also “really good” with his nieces and nephew.
“With them, I feel like I am able to be the kid that I am,” he said at the time.
Lewis Hamilton told Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport that he admired other racers who could “do their job well and have a family at the same time.”
“If I had a son, I would always have my eyes on him because I love children,” he revealed to the outlet. “I am an uncle and I love spending time with my nephews, but looking after them when they are with me is stressful and requires commitment.”
Hamilton added, “I have no regrets about it. I know where I am in my life, I am lucky and happy. In the time I have left in F1 I want to give my best and I will do it. Yes, I would love to [have children]. I love children and it’s definitely something I would like to do in my future.”
