The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Mayci Neeley offered her side of the story about Chase McWhorter‘s claim that she sent him “flirty” messages in the past.
During season 4, which premiered on Thursday, March 12, Mayci and Chase offered different perspectives on a past text exchange. Chase claimed he heard that Mayci was accusing him of sliding into her DMs despite them both being married. He showed snippets of the exchange where Mayci appeared to contact him first.
Mayci, for her part, shared in a confessional that she responded to a photo that didn’t have Chase in it. From there, Mayci tried to see if Chase wanted to be friends with her husband, Jacob Neeley, and there were even plans for a group hang until Chase rescinded the offer — and Mayci thought it was because her and Jacob weren’t into swinging.
“As far as the texting goes, I had no idea they were swingers. So I thought, ‘Oh, that’d be a fun friend for my husband.’ Because we had a double date prior to all of this,” Mayci exclusively told Us Weekly. “But I will say where the confusion lied is that my husband thought that he was flirting [via] texting and I was like, ‘No!'”
Mayci blamed a miscommunication that led to a “confusing” narrative about flirtatious conversations.
“There’s a scene that was cut where Chase was acting like I was hitting him up. So I’m like, ‘First of all, you are the furthest thing away from my type. It’s not even funny. I wouldn’t even touch you with a 10-foot pole,'” she quipped about the unaired moment. “But also, it did bug me a little bit watching it back.”
She continued: “I don’t know how people are gonna take that because I could see people being like, ‘Oh, she was flirting with him.'”
Mayci also recalled reading all the texts between her and Chase to producers, saying, “But I guess they only showed a little bit of it. It wasn’t flirty at all and I don’t think he was being flirty. I think the fact that we found out he’s a swinger later, we were like, ‘Why was he inviting us to a cabin party?'”
Chase, who is now divorced from Miranda, was previously named as part of Taylor Frankie Paul‘s soft-swinging scandal. Despite the drama taking place nearly five years ago, Mayci was surprised it was brought up again in season 4.
“I did hear things that I won’t even say about this. But Taylor’s ex-husband [Tate Paul] said that Chase was saying [things] about me. But again, we can leave that there and give me the benefit of the doubt. We’ve moved past this,” she told Us. “This is also freaking four years ago. The fact that it’s resurfacing now, this is anything to make himself relevant.”
Mayci’s costar Mikayla Matthews jumped in to support her friend during the joint interview, telling Us, “That’s why I hold grudges. Because I’m very big on the timing and he has proven himself time and time again to be the same person he was three years ago — leading up to now. I think it’s convenient timing. I think there’s an agenda and we love to see a toxic man on the show [so] another one [added] to the roster.”
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is streaming now on Hulu.
