NASCAR star Denny Hamlin had the entire Hamlin family in tears on Sunday after winning his first race since losing his father, Dennis Hamlin, in a house fire late last year.
The scene at Las Vegas Motor Speedway? Pure emotion — hugs from his mom, his fiancée, Jordan Fish, and all three of their kids as Hamlin climbed out of his car and straight into their arms.
Hamlin won the Pennzoil 400 on March 15, the 61st win of his 21-year NASCAR career. But forget the stats for a second. This one hit different.
His father died on December 28, 2025 from injuries sustained in a house fire in Stanley, North Carolina. He was 75.
Hamlin’s mother, Mary Lou Hamlin, was also injured in the fire — and she was right there in victory lane on Sunday. She was heard saying “That’s my boy!” as she celebrated with her son.
The last time Hamlin won? Also at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, back on October 12 at the South Point 400. His father had already been in poor health and couldn’t make it to that race. Just over two months later, he was gone.
Denny Hamlin Opens Up About Grief After WinIn a post-race press conference, Hamlin opened up about the brutal offseason he endured.
“Ultimately, I’m still a competitor. Everyone has to go through the grieving process. There were a lot of different things throughout the offseason that were really tough,” he said.
He admitted he wasn’t fully himself heading into the new season: “Up until a couple weeks ago, not fully locked in to what I need to do. That’s just natural. Everyone has to go through stuff.”
But competition brought him back to victory lane.
“The thrill of going out there and getting more wins. That, to me, is what drives me and makes me work as hard as I do at this,” he added. “Everyone goes through tragedies and stuff, but it doesn’t change who I am — and that’s a competitor that loves to go out there. This is my life’s work,” he added.
The moments after the win were all about family.

“I mean, this is a family sport. My family obviously had so much sacrifice to help me get here,” Denny said after climbing out of his car. “Now that I’ve grown, generations of Hamlins (are) following me. It’s great Mom gets to see this.”
Hamlin shares three kids with Fish: daughters Taylor James, born in 2013, and Molly Gold, born in 2017, and son Jameson Drew, born in 2025. All of them were part of that victory lane celebration.
Where Hamlin Ranks Among NASCAR’s All-Time GreatsWith win No. 61, Hamlin broke a tie with Kevin Harvick and now ranks 10th all-time on the NASCAR Cup Series wins list. He sits just two wins behind Kyle Busch.
He also joined some seriously elite company. Per The Athletic, Hamlin is now one of just five drivers to win a NASCAR race across 20 seasons — alongside Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway was where Hamlin won his last race before his father’s death, and it’s where he returned months later under far more painful circumstances.
When the checkered flag dropped, the result was the same: Hamlin in victory lane, surrounded by the people he loves most.
This time, his mom was there. His fiancée was there. His kids were there. And Hamlin believes his dad was watching, too.
“I know Dad’s still saying, ‘That’s my boy.’ Hell of a day,” he said after the win.
