This week on Royally Us, Princess Kate Middleton steps out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards.
On Tuesday, March 17, Kate, 44, visited the regiment at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Mons Barracks where she presented sprigs of shamrock to the Officers and Guardsmen, as well as to the regiment’s mascot, an Irish wolfhound. The parade ended with a royal salute and march-past, during which Kate took the salute as Colonel, a role that she was given in 2022.
Kate beamed as the Irish Guards offered three cheers of “Hip, hip, hooray” in her honor, taking a small sip of Guinness and raising her glass with the group.
The Princess of Wales sampled the drink after revealing that she has reduced her alcohol intake following her 2024 cancer diagnosis.
While visiting Southwark Brewing Company in London on March 12, royal editor Matt Wilkinson of The Sun reported she said, “Since my diagnosis, I haven’t had much alcohol. It’s something I have to be a lot more conscious of now.”
In March 2024, Kate announced that she was undergoing treatment for cancer. In September 2024, she completed chemotherapy treatment and in January 2025 announced that she was in remission and returned to more royal duties.
In September 2025, Prince William told Eugene Levy in an episode of Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler that 2024 was “the hardest year I’ve ever had.”
He added, “You know, life is sent to test us as well, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are.”
Russell Myers, author of William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, tells Us Weekly, that during Kate’s cancer battle, one got the sense that “Catherine was the much stronger of the two in that moment. She was the one to say, ‘This is the way we’re going to deal with it.’”
He added, “We’re going to peel away from the duties and people will understand there is a lot going on at the moment, and if we get this right, then we’ve got a much greater foundation to get everything else right in the future.”
