2 Things We Loved & 2 Things We Hated From The Finale Of “Crushology 101”

Class is over for everybody at “Crushology 101”! During the course of 12 episodes, Ban Hee Jin (Roh Jeong Eui) and Hwang Jae Yeol (Lee Chae Min) taught us that love, relationships, and life as young adults can be more complex than anyone could think. However, they also showed us that everything is worthwhile as long as you are true to your heart and yourself. Here are the best and the worst of this K-drama’s finale to bid goodbye to this story!
Warning: spoilers from episodes 11-12 ahead!
HATED: The messy and rushed plotAt some point in this show, it was hard to figure out where exactly it was going. Although the main story continued revolving around Bunny and Jae Yeol’s relationship, once they separate and she goes to study abroad, we are left uncertain about what will become of them. Once Bunny returns to South Korea, her first love appears practically out of nowhere, professing his love for her. Although we’ve had glimpses of Jin Hyun Oh (Hong Min Ki) throughout the show, and you can’t help but appreciate the eye candy treat, there isn’t any real backstory or context about him or his intentions towards Bunny, making him somewhat suspicious.
Even worse, all of Bunny’s progress seems to go away the moment she meets Hwang Jae Yeol again. She not only gets easily swayed by everyone around her, but she breaks her boundaries one more time when Jae Yeol is in a dilemma, running to his side when he loses important hardware for his job. Ultimately, Jin Hyun Oh’s small part serves only to trigger the male lead’s jealousy, which appears to be the only effective way to make him open up and be honest about his feelings. And as quickly as he arrives, Hyun Oh disappears.
When it comes to relationships, there’s always a bit of push and pull between couples to keep things interesting, but when the show has only a couple of episodes left, it can feel kind of pointless. Jae Yeol might have his reasons to be upset with Bunny, but so does she. After we discover they never talked while she was abroad, we could assume she wouldn’t accept him back right away, but it is Jae Yeol who puts up a barrier from the get-go, pushing Bunny away and even dropping out of a class they shared by accident.
Admittedly, they both are awkward and foolish, so it isn’t only Jae Yeol’s fault. They can’t seem to be able to meet eye to eye and openly talk about their feelings. They meet each other almost on a daily basis, as if fate were giving them the chance to reconcile, but they don’t do it, stubbornly sticking to their own standings. Even when they agree to let bygones be bygones, they don’t speak their minds until, once again, it appears to be too late. It takes them long enough to reach this realization, making us see them going through a lot of pain and useless yearning. But at the end of the day, they deliver the long-awaited reconciliation.
One of the most enjoyable things to watch in these final episodes was Cha Ji Won’s (Cho Jun Young) ending. Rather than staying as a pitiful second lead who was rejected by the female lead, he comes out on top as her best friend, someone she can always rely on. Even after Bunny returns to Korea, their friendship seems to go back to the start, where they can easily enjoy a meal together and talk candidly about their lives. Ji Won not only is able to get over his romantic feelings for her, but he’s even able to give perspective to Jae Yeol and assure him that there has never been another man in Bunny’s heart but him.
In the end, we even get the so-awaited and hilarious bromance between Ji Won and Jae Yeol. His character wraps up perfectly when he gets the chance to pursue what he really wants, focusing on his own life rather than living by his younger sister’s side. Ji Won’s character was one of the most consistent throughout the show, and it was a relief to see him getting a much-needed and well-deserved happy ending. In his own terms, he has learned how to have a crush for the first time and even how to put a beautiful ending to it.
Finally, we get a few last minutes full of laughter, silliness, and easy-going romance. After everything that happened between the main couple, they get the chance to enjoy the simple things of their lives every day. From their friends’ love quarrels to their parents meeting for the first time in a goofy way, looking for new job opportunities, and pursuing their dreams, Bunny and Jae Yeol walk hand in hand to a bright future together, trying to live without regrets.
In a sense, this finale fits perfectly into the show since it leaves us with a feeling of a new beginning rather than a straightforward ending. For these young people, it isn’t the end but barely the start of a new chapter in their lives. Even if we don’t get to see on our screen what’s to come for them, we can bid a warm goodbye to Bunny and her crushes, who gave us an entertaining and cute show that brought the sparkle of young love into this spring.
