SM Entertainment Becomes Second-Largest Shareholder Of 82MAJOR’s Agency Great M Entertainment

SM Entertainment has become the second-largest shareholder of GREAT M Entertainment, the agency behind boy group 82MAJOR.

On May 23, SM announced that it had signed a share transfer agreement and would complete its acquisition of shares in GREAT M on May 27.

SM explained, “This investment was made based on GREAT M’s CEO Kim Young Sun’s proven production capabilities—demonstrated through various successful projects during his time at FNC Entertainment—and the musical direction pursued by 82MAJOR, which we believe aligns well with SM’s multi-label strategy.” The company also noted that it recognized the potential and individual talents of the artists under GREAT M.

The agency further emphasized, “This marks the first case of expanding our multi-label strategy—one of the core elements of our ‘SM 3.0’ initiative—through external investment.” They added, “It is part of our shift toward a system in which various production centers and labels independently develop and manage intellectual property (IP) with autonomy.”

SM also shared its ongoing plans to continue acquiring and investing in both domestic and international labels in order to expand musical diversity and experimentation, while diversifying revenue streams and increasing its influence in the global market.

GREAT M Entertainment was founded in March 2020 by CEO Kim Young Sun, a former executive director at FNC Entertainment. The agency’s boy group 82MAJOR debuted in October 2023.
