The Last of Us season 2 finale left viewers with some lingering questions ahead of the show’s forthcoming third season.
Spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 below.
Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) came face-to-face during the episode, titled “Convergence,” which aired on Sunday, May 25. The ending left a major cliffhanger while also confirming that Abby’s story within the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) would be the focal point of season 3.
“What I want the audience to feel thematically at the end of the season is that they aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go,” the show’s cocreator Craig Mazin told Deadline after the finale. “That there has always been a story that we’ve been telling about the good and bad of love, but we switch which side is good and bad sometimes.”
Keep scrolling for questions that need to be answered in The Last of Us season 3:
Who Got Shot?In a Sopranos finale-esque sequence, the screen goes black near the end of The Last of Us season 2 finale. Instead of silence, a gunshot goes off. However, it’s unclear who was shot. Did Tommy (Gabriel Luna) shoot Abby to save Ellie? Did Abby shoot Ellie?
What Is the WLF Growing?
Viewers discover that the show is switching points-of-view to relive the three days leading up to Abby’s confrontation with Ellie. The shift is revealed with Abby waking up in the abandoned stadium where the WLF seemingly live. While she looks out of the VIP box she was sleeping in, it appears WLF workers (?) are harvesting crops. Is this how they survive?
Similarly, how did Abby and her crew convince Isaac (Jeffrey Wright) to let them into the WLF? He doesn’t seem like someone who is particularly welcoming to newcomers.
What Happened Between the WLF and the Seraphites? The show’s cocreator Neil Druckman has his own explanation for this one.
“I have so many questions, and I understand that the audience does too. I sort of want to assure them that those questions are correct and will be answered,” he told Deadline. “What is going on? How did that war start? Why? How did the Seraphites start? Who is the prophet? What happened to her? What does Isaac want? What’s happening at the end of episode 7? What is this explosion? What is all of it? And all of it will become clear.”
When Ellie killed Mel (Ariela Barer) it’s revealed that she’s pregnant. In perhaps the show’s darkest scene — sorry Joel — Mel asks Ellie to cut her baby out so it survives. Both mother and baby die but … whose baby was it?
What’s Manny’s Deal?
Danny Ramirez, big love, but there are a lot of questions about Manny. Some of his backstory — and why he’s so angry all the time — need to be explained.
Where Are the Infected? The Infected really didn’t make a huge appearance in season 2. There are a few in Seattle, which were shown, but where are the rest of them? It’s important to remember how we got here.
