If Memorial Day left you feeling patriotic (or at least has you thinking about American flags), then you need a series to match that energy. Luckily, HBO Max has a wide selection of shows that are perfect for a long weekend binge-watch.
John Cena, Steve Buscemi and Julia Louis-Dreyfus star in three series that Watch With Us is recommending for your June viewing pleasure. Check out our recommendations below.
‘Veep’ (2012-2019)If the chaotic nature of U.S. politics makes you feel like laughing at the red, white and blue, then Veep is the perfect show to tickle your political funnybone.
Seinfeld alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hilarious as the ambitious Selina Meyer, the Vice President of the United States. While she endeavors to maintain her reputation and cement her political legacy, she’s helped (and sometimes hindered) by her staff, including Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky), Dan Egan (Reid Scott), Gary Walsh (Tony Hale) and Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons). The hilarious satire constantly skewers American politics with sharp commentary and clever writing, making it a show that’s so funny, it hurts.
‘Boardwalk Empire’ (2010-2014)If you enjoyed a nice beer at the beach on Memorial Day weekend, Boardwalk Empire may very well remind you that that wasn’t always such an easy thing to do. This critically acclaimed drama takes place during the Prohibition Era in Atlantic City, New Jersey and centers around Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi.
Boardwalk explores Nucky’s rise to power as a political figure and bootlegging kingpin and focuses on the entangled lives of politicians, gangsters, and federal agents. Martin Scorsese served as an executive producer on this shocking drama and even directed the pilot episode. There’s violence, power, ambition and the quest for the American Dream, all played against the backdrop of the beachside gambling hotspot.
James Gunn‘s surprisingly poignant superhero series is about to return for a long-anticipated second season, so it’s the perfect time to catch up on John Cena‘s comedy-drama show. Cena stars as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, a vigilante whose obsession with peace (no matter how many people he has to kill to get it) landed him in prison. Much to his surprise, Chris is freed, but he must join a covert ops team to stop parasitic creatures called “Butterflies” from taking over the earth.
As Peacemaker begins to look inward and question his own heroism, he grows closer to his teammates, including Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), John Economos (Steve Agee) and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma as an even more sociopathic, but strangely charming, costumed crimefighter). Cena shows surprising depth, in addition to his well-proven comedic abilities, in this series that forms part of Gunn’s new DC Universe.
