Apple Music and Spotify finally updated the copyrights to Taylor Swift’s albums after she bought back the master recordings of her first six albums — and fans are rejoicing.
“With the latest Spotify update, Taylor Swift’s first 6 albums now credit their rightful owner across both Spotify and Apple Music,” one fan account wrote via X on Sunday, June 8, while another added, “We waited for this moment!”
Last month, Swift, 35, shared that she gained control of her entire music catalog after she lost the rights to her music in 2019 when record label Big Machine sold them to music executive Scooter Braun.
“I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away,” she wrote via her website in May. “But, that’s all in the past now. … I really get to say these words: All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.”
She continued, “To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it. To my fans, you know how important this has been to me — so much so that I meticulously re-recorded and released four of my albums, calling them ‘Taylor’s Version.’ The passionate support you showed these albums and the success story you turned The Eras Tour into is why I was able to buy back my music. I can’t thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now.”
The Eras Tour performer noted in her statement that she has full ownership “with no strings attached” of her songs, music videos, concert films, album photography and unreleased tracks as well as “the memories, the magic [and] the madness.”
Braun, for his part, reacted to the news in a statement shared with Us Weekly. “I am happy for her,” Braun, 43, said in May.
Days later, Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, celebrated her achievement while jamming out to one of her iconic tracks. In the Wednesday, June 4, episode of Travis, 35, and brother Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast, guest Shaquille O’Neal played “I Knew You Were Trouble” off of his phone. In the clip, Travis and Jason, 37, danced and smiled as the song played.
“That’s my favorite song in the world, brother,” O’Neal said, to which Travis replied, “Shout out to Tay Tay. Just got that song back, too. Just bought all her music back so it’s finally hers, man, I appreciate that, dog. Love you big dog.”
