Dakota Johnson already knows the one quality she’s looking for in her next boyfriend following her reported split from Chris Martin.
Johnson, 35, shared her top dating non-negotiable in an interview alongside Materialists costar Chris Evans on Today on Monday, June 9.
“Like, not an a–hole,” Johnson told host Craig Melvin.
“That’s concise,” Melvin, 46, said with a laugh. “That’s the only non-negotiable. That was nail on the head.”
Johnson’s blunt response came after Evans, 43, said that his non-negotiable was, “Must love dogs. Gotta love dogs. If you’re not a dog person, what are we doing?”
The discussion about dating and matchmaking — which is at the center of Materialists, premiering in theaters on June 13 — came days after it was reported by People on June 4 that Johnson and Martin, 48, had called off their engagement after nearly eight years together.
Us Weekly reached out to Martin and Johnson for comment at the time.
Prior to the split reports, the former couple was spotted in Malibu, California, together in May. At the beginning of the year, they were also seen holding hands while on a trip together in India.
Martin also promoted Johnson’s upcoming movie days before the reported breakup.
“Thank you so much everybody. Be kind to yourself, be kind to each other. Don’t forget to go see Materialists,” he told the audience at a Coldplay concert in Stanford, California, as seen in a fan video shared on social media on June 1. “We love you! We’ll see you next time.”
Amid the split news, Johnson was seen walking in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood without her emerald engagement ring on June 4, in photos published by the Daily Mail.
Johnson previously sparked split rumors in August 2024 when she was seen without the ring, despite supporting Martin during Coldplay’s summer tour. However, Johnson’s rep denied that there were any issues at the time, saying, “The reports are not true. They are happily together.”
The Fifty Shades of Grey actress and the songwriter were first linked in December 2017 after Martin’s divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow. Johnson and Martin later briefly split in the summer of 2019, but they reunited after one month apart with help from Paltrow, 52.
“Gwyneth is the one who pushed them to do it,” an insider told Us in August 2019.
Paltrow, who shares daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, with Martin, publicly gushed about Johnson in a 2020 interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“I love her,” the Goop founder said. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.”
Us confirmed in March 2024 that Martin and Johnson, who kept their relationship mostly private, had gotten engaged a “while” ago.
“Chris and Dakota have been engaged for a while now, but they’re not the type to make some huge public announcement because they try to keep their relationship as private as possible,” a source told Us at the time. “They’re not in a huge rush to get married and don’t have a final wedding date set just yet.”
