Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier surprised many by falling to the 7th round of the 2026 NFL Draft — but his fiancée, Ella Springfield, wasn’t about to fret over it.
“All in Gods perfect timing!” Springfield wrote via Instagram on Monday, April 27. “So blessed to call Kansas City our new home ❤️.”
Springfield shared a carousel of photos of Nussmeier’s family and friends watching day 3 of the Draft on Saturday, April 25, during which the former Louisiana State University quarterback was drafted at No. 249 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I love you!” Nussmeier, 24, commented on the post.
Nussmeier was widely expected to be drafted much sooner, but ultimately fell to the Chiefs in the 7th round.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight,” he wrote in his own Instagram post after the Draft.
Nussmeier and Springfield announced their engagement in July in 2025. “Forever and always, yes yes yes,” Springfield shared via Instagram at the time.
After having to sweat out the Draft process, Nussmeier said it was an “incredible feeling” to hear his name called.
“I felt like I was sitting there waiting forever,” he told reporters. “I couldn’t have been more excited to see that [816] area code pop up. … It was difficult for me sitting there and not understanding why. Obviously, I have belief in myself and where I believe I should have been valued.”
He added, “I couldn’t be more blessed to go to such a great team.”
In Kansas City, Nussmeier hopes to join a quarterback room anchored by Patrick Mahomes.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to learn,” Nussmeier said. “I’m just grateful that I have this opportunity. I can only imagine. I’m so excited to be in a room with those guys, coach [Andy] Reid and his unbelievable offensive mind and sitting behind Patrick and [stealing] some things from him and [seeing] the game through his eyes. It’s going to be an unbelievable experience for me.”
Nussmeier only appeared in nine games for LSU last season, hampered by an abdominal injury — but he wouldn’t have had things any other way.
“I went through a lot,” Nussmeier said after the Draft. “I’m a big believer in my faith and my faith is my foundation. That’s how I got through all the stuff I went through this year. I’m the same guy I was before. I’m actually better off because of it.”
